Spirulina Mango Protein Shake
A vibrant, nutrient-dense smoothie combining earthy spirulina with sweet mango and plant-based protein. This quick breakfast or post-workout drink is creamy, naturally sweet, and requires just five minutes to prepare. Perfect for refueling after exercise or starting your day with sustained energy.
Steps
Before you start
- Gather all ingredients before blending so you can work quickly
- If using fresh mango, peel and cube it; freeze pieces for 1 hour or buy frozen mango chunks
- Use unsweetened almond milk to let the natural mango sweetness shine through
Pour liquid base
- Pour 1 cup (240 ml) of cold unsweetened almond milk into your high-speed blender.
- This creates the liquid foundation that will help the blades break down the frozen fruit and powders evenly.

Tip: Start with liquid at the bottom so frozen fruit won't stick to the dry blender base and clog the blades.
Add frozen fruit
- Add 1 cup (150 g) of frozen mango chunks to the blender.
- If using the optional frozen banana for extra creaminess, add 0.5 banana (60 g) sliced.
- The frozen fruit gives the shake its thick, ice-cream-like texture and keeps it cold without diluting it with ice.

Tip: Use frozen fruit straight from the freezer; thawing even slightly will make the shake watery and thin.
Add powders and sweeteners
- Measure and add 1 teaspoon (4 g) of spirulina powder and 1 scoop (25 g) of plant-based protein powder directly into the blender.
- If desired, add 1 tablespoon (21 g) of honey or agave nectar for sweetness and 0.5 tablespoon (7.5 ml) of freshly squeezed lime juice to brighten the earthy spirulina flavor.
- The lime juice balances the mineral notes and prevents the shake from tasting flat.

Tip: Add spirulina gradually if you're new to it; the earthy taste is strong, and you can always increase next time. Lime juice is key to masking any off-flavors.
Blend until smooth
- Secure the blender lid firmly and blend on high speed for 45–60 seconds, until the mixture is completely smooth with no visible spirulina powder flecks, grittiness, or chunks of mango.
- The shake should be thick enough to coat a spoon but still pourable.
- Stop and scrape down the sides with a spatula if needed, then blend for another 10–15 seconds until uniform.

Ready when: Completely smooth, vibrant teal-green color, no grittiness or powder streaks, thick and pourable
Tip: Avoid over-blending beyond 90 seconds; prolonged blending generates heat that can warm the shake and degrade the protein structure. If your blender struggles with frozen fruit, let the mango thaw for 2 minutes at room temperature first.
Pour and serve immediately
- Pour the shake immediately into a tall drinking glass (16 oz / 475 ml capacity).
- Drink right away while the shake is cold, thick, and at its best texture.
- If desired, top with a sprinkle of coconut flakes, hemp seeds, or a few fresh mango chunks for garnish.

Tip: Drink within 5 minutes of blending for the best cold texture. If the shake sits, frozen fruit will melt and thin it out; you can add 2–3 tablespoons (30–45 ml) cold almond milk and re-blend for 10 seconds to restore thickness.
Good to know
Tips
- Spirulina powder has a distinctly earthy, mineral taste; start with just 1 teaspoon (4 g) if you're new to it, taste, and increase next time. A squeeze of lime juice or a touch of honey masks the earthiness beautifully.
- Freeze bananas in advance by peeling, slicing into coins, laying on a parchment-lined tray, freezing for 3 hours, then transferring to a zip-top bag. They'll stay fresh for up to 3 months and are ready to grab.
- For a post-workout shake, skip honey and add an extra 0.5 scoop (12 g) of protein powder for 35–40 g total protein to support muscle recovery.
- If your shake is too thick to drink (especially if blending frozen banana and mango), add 2–3 tablespoons (30–45 ml) of cold almond milk and blend for 10 seconds until it reaches your preferred consistency.
Make ahead
Prepare individual ingredient packets the night before: measure spirulina, protein powder, and honey into small containers, and portion frozen mango and banana into bags. In the morning, simply add liquid and blend for a 3-minute breakfast.
Storage & reheating
Best consumed immediately. If you must store it, transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 2 hours; separation may occur, so stir or re-blend briefly before drinking. Do not freeze; the texture will become grainy as the protein destabilizes during thawing.
Substitutions
- unsweetened almond milk → Coconut milk (light or full-fat), oat milk, or soy milk. Use 1 cup (240 ml) of any plant-based milk. Coconut adds richness; oat provides creaminess; soy boosts protein. Adjust sweetener if using sweetened versions.
- frozen mango chunks → Frozen pineapple, peaches, or a 50/50 blend of frozen mango and frozen berries. Keeps the tropical vibe or adds tartness. Adjust lime juice if using very tart berries (reduce to 0.25 tablespoon / 3.75 ml).
- plant-based protein powder (vanilla or neutral flavor) → Hemp seed protein, pea protein, or brown rice protein powder. All work equally well. Some have stronger flavors, so taste at the end and adjust sweetener if needed. Use 1 scoop (25 g) of any powder.
- frozen banana, sliced → 1 tablespoon (15 g) of almond butter or cashew butter for creaminess. Adds richness and keeps protein content high if omitting the banana. May slightly reduce the tropical sweetness, so add an extra 0.5 teaspoon honey if desired.
