Spanish Churro Cinnamon Banana Smoothie
A creamy, indulgent dessert smoothie inspired by Spanish churros. Ripe banana blends with warm cinnamon, rich milk, and honey, then topped with crispy churro pieces for authentic texture and flavor. Perfect for breakfast or an afternoon treat.
Steps
Before you start
- Freeze banana slices at least 2 hours ahead (or use pre-frozen)
- If using store-bought churros, have them at room temperature for best topping texture
- Chill glasses in the freezer for 5 minutes while blending for a frostier drink
Combine base ingredients
- Add the frozen banana slices, cold milk, Greek yogurt, honey, ground cinnamon (0.75 teaspoon or 1.9 g), and vanilla extract (0.5 teaspoon or 2.5 ml) to the blender.

Tip: Use frozen banana for a thick, creamy texture without diluting the drink with ice.
Blend until smooth
- Blend on high speed for 45–60 seconds, until the mixture is smooth and creamy with no visible banana chunks.
- The smoothie should be thick enough to hold a slight peak when you lift the blender lid.

Ready when: Mixture is smooth and creamy with no chunks; pours easily but holds shape slightly.
Tip: If the smoothie is too thick, add 2–3 tablespoons cold milk. If too thin, add another frozen banana slice.
Divide into glasses
- Pour the smoothie evenly into 2 chilled glasses (about 12 fl oz each).

Tip: Pre-chilling glasses keeps the smoothie cold longer and adds a professional touch.
Top and serve
- Scatter the churro pieces (about 1 ounce or 28 g per glass) over the top of each smoothie.
- If using the optional cinnamon-sugar topping, sprinkle a light dusting (about 0.5 tablespoon or 6 g per glass) over the churro pieces for extra sweetness and crunch.

Tip: Add churro pieces just before serving so they stay crispy; if added too early, they'll soften.
Good to know
Tips
- Freeze banana slices in a zip-top bag so they stay fresh and are ready to use whenever you want to blend this smoothie.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute Greek yogurt with silken tofu (0.5 cup or 120 g) and use your choice of plant-based milk; the texture will be equally creamy.
- If your churros are stale, warm them in a 300°F (150°C) oven for 3–4 minutes to restore crispness before cutting and adding to the smoothie.
- For extra indulgence, drizzle a tiny amount of honey or dulce de leche over the churro topping just before serving.
Make ahead
Freeze banana slices up to 3 weeks in advance. Prepare the Greek yogurt and milk mixture in a container up to 24 hours ahead and store in the fridge; blend with frozen banana when ready to serve.
Storage & reheating
Best consumed immediately. If prepared ahead, store the blended base (without churro topping) in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 4 hours; re-blend briefly before serving and add fresh churro pieces on top. Do not freeze.
Substitutions
- plain Greek yogurt → plain regular yogurt or sour cream (use the same amount). Regular yogurt will make the smoothie slightly thinner; sour cream adds tanginess but use only 1/3 cup (80 g) to avoid overpowering the drink.
- whole milk → oat milk, almond milk, or coconut milk. Plant-based milks work well; use unsweetened varieties to control sweetness, or use sweetened versions and reduce honey to 1 tablespoon (15 g).
- churro pieces (store-bought or homemade), cut into ½-inch pieces → crispy churro chips, plain churro wafers, or fried pastry crisps. Any crispy Spanish pastry topping will give you similar texture and authenticity.
- ground cinnamon → Spanish canela (Ceylon cinnamon) or a pinch of nutmeg. Canela is milder and more fragrant; use the same amount. Nutmeg works but use only 0.25 teaspoon (0.5 g) to avoid overpowering the drink.
