Oatmeal Banana Cinnamon Smoothie
A creamy, filling smoothie that combines rolled oats, ripe banana, and warm cinnamon spice with a hint of honey sweetness. The oats give this drink a thick, substantial texture that keeps you satisfied through the morning, while the banana provides natural sweetness and creaminess. It's ready in minutes and requires just a blender.
Steps
Before you start
- Use a ripe banana (skin lightly speckled with brown) for the best sweetness and creaminess
- Chill your milk in the fridge beforehand if you prefer a colder smoothie
- Have your blender clean and ready to use
Prepare the banana
- Peel the ripe banana and cut it into 1-inch chunks.
- Set aside.
- This size allows the blender to process the banana more evenly and prevents it from turning to paste before the other ingredients break down.

Ready when: Banana is cut into uniform chunks and ready to add to blender
Tip: Cutting banana into chunks rather than adding it whole ensures faster, more even blending.
Layer ingredients in blender
- Pour the cold milk into the blender first, then add the rolled oats (½ cup or 50 g), banana chunks, ground cinnamon (½ teaspoon or 2.5 g), honey if using (1 tablespoon or 21 ml), and vanilla extract if using (¼ teaspoon or 1.25 ml).
- Do not blend yet.

Ready when: All ingredients are in the blender in the correct order
Tip: Adding the liquid first helps the blender blades move freely and prevents the oats from clumping at the top.
Blend until smooth
- Secure the blender lid and blend on high speed for 45 to 60 seconds, or until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy with no visible oat chunks.
- The banana should be fully incorporated and the cinnamon evenly distributed throughout.
- Stop and check the consistency—if you prefer it thinner, add more milk (1 tablespoon at a time) and blend for 10 seconds.
- If you prefer it thicker, add more oats (1 tablespoon at a time) and blend for another 15 seconds.

Ready when: Mixture is completely smooth and pourable with no grittiness or visible oat pieces
Tip: High-powered blenders break down the oats faster and create a creamier texture. If using a standard blender, blend for 1 to 1.5 minutes to fully pulverize the oats.
Add ice and final blend (optional)
- If using ice for a thicker, colder smoothie, add ½ cup (120 ml) of ice cubes now and blend on high speed for another 20 to 30 seconds until the ice is fully incorporated and the smoothie is cold and frothy.

Ready when: Ice is completely blended and smoothie is cold and homogeneous
Tip: Blend ice separately from the base to avoid over-blending the oats, which can make the smoothie gummy.
Pour and serve immediately
- Divide the smoothie evenly between two serving glasses (about 10 oz per glass).
- If desired, sprinkle a tiny pinch of ground cinnamon on top of each serving for garnish and extra flavor.
- Serve right away with a spoon or wide straw.

Ready when: Smoothie is divided into glasses and ready to drink
Tip: Serve immediately so the smoothie stays cold and the oats don't absorb too much liquid and become gummy or overly thick.
Good to know
Tips
- For a protein boost, add 1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseed, or ½ cup of plain Greek yogurt before blending.
- Freeze banana slices ahead of time for a thicker, more ice-cream-like consistency without diluting the drink as much.
- If your banana is very soft and sweet, you may not need the honey—taste and adjust.
- For a warm smoothie, heat the milk to about 110°F (43°C) before blending and skip the ice.
Storage & reheating
Smoothies are best enjoyed fresh. If you must store it, pour into an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 4 hours; the oats will continue to absorb liquid and the texture will thicken. Stir well before drinking, and add a splash of milk if it becomes too thick. Do not freeze, as the texture will separate when thawed.
Substitutions
- whole milk (or milk of choice) → almond milk, oat milk, coconut milk, or any non-dairy alternative. Use 1:1 ratio. Dairy-free milks may result in a slightly less creamy texture; adding an extra ½ tablespoon of honey can compensate.
- honey → maple syrup, agave nectar, or brown sugar dissolved in a little milk. Use equal amounts by volume. Omit entirely if using a naturally sweet banana or prefer an unsweetened smoothie.
- rolled oats → steel-cut oats or quick oats. Steel-cut oats may require 30 seconds extra blending time. Quick oats will blend faster and result in a slightly thinner texture.
- ground cinnamon → pumpkin pie spice, nutmeg, or cardamom. Use the same amount. Pumpkin pie spice adds depth; nutmeg and cardamom offer a different warm spice profile.
