Steps

Before you start
  • Chill your blender pitcher if possible (run cold water through it, then empty). If using fresh raspberries, rinse and pat dry. Peel the banana just before blending to prevent browning.
  1. Gather and chill

    • Place your blender pitcher in the freezer for 2–3 minutes while you gather all ingredients.
    • This keeps the smoothie colder longer without diluting it with ice.
    • Have your glasses ready and chilled if possible.

Tip: A chilled blender slows the warming effect of blending friction, helping your smoothie stay thick and frosty.

  2. Add yogurt and milk

    • Pour the cold yogurt and milk into the blender first.
    • This liquid base helps the blades move smoothly and prevents the fruit from sticking to the bottom.
  3. Layer fruit

    • Add the banana chunks, then scatter the raspberries on top.
    • Layering heavier fruit at the bottom and lighter fruit higher helps the blades break everything down evenly and reduces the need for stopping to push down.
  4. Add sweetener and vanilla

    • If using honey and/or vanilla extract, add them now on top of the fruit.
    • Cover the blender lid with a towel in case of splashing.

Tip: A kitchen towel over the lid also lets heat escape and prevents your hands from getting splashed.

  5. Blend until smooth

    • Secure the blender lid and start on low speed for 5–10 seconds to break down the fruit and combine liquid.
    • Increase to high speed and blend for 20–30 seconds until completely smooth with no visible fruit chunks or streaks.
    • If the mixture is too thick, add 2–3 tablespoons (30–45 ml) more milk and blend for 10 more seconds.

Ready when: Smoothie is uniform in color, no fruit pieces visible, and flows easily.

Tip: Blending too long (over 1 minute total) warms the smoothie and can break down the banana into a watery consistency. Stop as soon as smooth.

  6. Pour and serve

    • Divide the smoothie between two chilled glasses.
    • If it separated slightly, give it a quick stir with a spoon or fast whisk.
    • Serve immediately while cold and foamy.

Tip: A tall spoon or thin spatula is useful for pushing any remaining thick smoothie from the blender pitcher into your glass.

Good to know

Tips
  • Freeze raspberries and banana separately on a sheet pan, then transfer to freezer bags. Frozen fruit chills the smoothie without adding watery melted ice, and lets you make smoothies year-round.
  • If your smoothie is too thin, add a handful of ice cubes and blend for 10 more seconds. If too thick, add milk 1 tablespoon (15 ml) at a time until it reaches your preferred drinking consistency.
  • For extra protein and thickness, add 1 tablespoon (15 g) unsweetened protein powder or 2 tablespoons (28 g) Greek yogurt. The base recipe already has about 8 g protein from the yogurt.
  • Taste before serving: if you use very tart raspberries or unsweetened milk, add a few more drops of honey or a small squeeze of lemon juice for brightness.
Make ahead

Assemble everything into the blender the night before and refrigerate (don't blend yet). The fruit will release juices overnight, making blending faster. Blend for 15–20 seconds just before serving and add a touch more milk if needed for thickness.

Storage & reheating

Smoothies are best served immediately. If you must make ahead, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 8 hours; liquid and solids will separate. Stir well or re-blend for 10 seconds before drinking. Do not freeze smoothies in glass to avoid breakage; pour into freezer-safe plastic cups and freeze for up to 1 month, then thaw in the fridge for 1–2 hours before serving.

Substitutions
  • plain Greek yogurt, nonfat or full-fat → Plain regular yogurt (full-fat, low-fat, or nonfat). Use the same amount. Regular yogurt is slightly thinner, so you may add 2–3 tablespoons more to reach the same consistency.
  • cold whole, 2%, or plant-based milk → Almond milk, oat milk, soy milk, or coconut milk (unsweetened). Use the same amount. Plant-based milks add different flavors—oat milk is creamiest, almond is most neutral.
  • fresh or frozen raspberries → Blackberries, blueberries, or a mix of frozen berries. Keep the same amount (weight or volume). Blueberries are milder and sweeter; blackberries are earthier.
  • ripe banana, medium → 1 cup (240 ml) frozen banana chunks or ½ frozen banana plus ½ ripe avocado. Frozen banana thickens the smoothie and removes the need for ice. Avocado adds creaminess and healthy fat with a subtle flavor.
