Virgin Piña Colada Smoothie
A creamy, tropical blended drink with the classic flavors of a piña colada—rich coconut cream and sweet pineapple juice—chilled with ice and ready in minutes. This alcohol-free version is perfect for any occasion, from brunch to poolside refreshment.
Steps
Before you start
- Chill your serving glasses in the freezer for at least 15 minutes if you prefer extra-cold drinks
- Make sure your blender is clean and dry
- Measure all ingredients before you begin blending
Prepare the blender and ingredients
- Place your blender on a clean, stable work surface.
- If using canned coconut cream, open the can and give it a gentle stir to break up any separation between the cream and liquid.
- Measure out 1½ cups (360 ml) of chilled pineapple juice, ½ cup (120 ml) of coconut cream, and ¾ cup (180 ml) of coconut milk into separate measuring cups and have them ready to pour.
- Place 1½ cups (200 g) of ice cubes in a small bowl near the blender.

Ready when: All ingredients are measured and ready to blend
Tip: Separating and measuring first prevents you from stopping mid-blend to measure, which disrupts the blending process
Combine liquid base
- Pour the chilled pineapple juice (1½ cups / 360 ml), coconut cream (½ cup / 120 ml), and coconut milk (¾ cup / 180 ml) into your blender in that order.
- Do not blend yet.
- Secure the lid loosely and tilt the blender slightly to shake the ingredients gently a few times, helping the heavier coconut cream to combine with the liquids without lumps.

Ready when: Liquid base is combined with no visible coconut cream lumps
Tip: Pre-combining the liquids without the blender running prevents the coconut cream from flying up and sticking to the blender's sides or lid
Add ice and blend until smooth
- Remove the lid and add 1½ cups (200 g) of ice cubes to the blender.
- Secure the lid firmly, ensuring it is tight.
- Start blending on high speed and continue for 45–60 seconds, until the smoothie is thick, creamy, and completely smooth with no visible chunks of ice remaining.

Ready when: Smoothie is thick, creamy, and uniform with no ice chunks visible
Tip: If your blender struggles or makes a grinding noise, stop and blend in two 25–30 second intervals instead of one long continuous blend to avoid overheating the motor
Pour and garnish
- Carefully pour the smoothie evenly into two chilled glasses, dividing it as equally as possible.
- Each glass should be about three-quarters full.
- Place a fresh pineapple wedge or cherry on the rim of each glass if desired.
- Insert a cocktail straw into each drink and serve immediately while thick and cold.

Tips
- For a deeper coconut flavor, use full-fat coconut milk in place of half the coconut cream and half the milk—the richness is the key to an authentic piña colada taste.
- If you prefer a less sweet smoothie, reduce the pineapple juice to 1¼ cups (300 ml) and add ¼ cup (60 ml) unsweetened almond milk or water to keep the volume consistent.
- For extra protein and creaminess, blend in ½ cup (120 ml) of vanilla or coconut yogurt or 1 tablespoon of unsweetened coconut powder.
- Rim your glasses with toasted shredded coconut before pouring for an impressive, restaurant-style presentation.
Storage & reheating
This smoothie is best enjoyed fresh. Once blended, it will begin to separate and the ice will melt within 5–10 minutes. If you must prepare ahead, blend the pineapple juice, coconut cream, and coconut milk together and refrigerate for up to 4 hours; add ice and blend again just before serving.
Substitutions
- unsweetened pineapple juice, chilled → Fresh pineapple chunks (1½ cups / 375 g, fresh or frozen), blended with ½ cup (120 ml) water or fresh-pressed pineapple juice. This gives a fresher, more natural pineapple flavor and a slightly thicker texture. Reduce water if using frozen pineapple to avoid excess liquid.
- coconut cream, from a can or bottle → Heavy cream (½ cup / 120 ml). Delivers a rich, creamy texture but loses the authentic coconut flavor. Use if you prefer a lighter tropical taste.
- coconut milk, full-fat (from a can or carton) → Full-fat Greek yogurt or vanilla yogurt (¾ cup / 180 ml). Creates a thicker, tangy smoothie with more protein. The coconut flavor becomes subtler, and the drink will be less sweet; you may want to add 1 tablespoon of sugar or honey.
- ice cubes → Frozen pineapple chunks (1½ cups / 375 g, instead of ice cubes). Adds extra pineapple flavor and natural sweetness while providing the bulk and chill. The smoothie will be slightly thicker and more intensely fruity.
