Steps
Before you start
- Chill all ingredients before blending for a cold shake
- If using a vanilla bean, split and scrape the seeds before blending
- Have your blender ready and set to high speed
Prepare vanilla and combine dry ingredients
- If using a vanilla bean, lay it on a cutting board and carefully slice lengthwise with a small sharp knife.
- Use the back of the knife to scrape out the tiny black seeds.
- Place the rolled oats and vanilla bean seeds in the blender.

Ready when: Vanilla seeds visible throughout oats
Tip: Scrape the vanilla pod with the spine of your knife at a 45-degree angle to capture all the flavorful seeds.
Add liquid and creamy ingredients
- Pour the cold milk into the blender.
- Add the cold Greek yogurt and barley malt syrup.
- If desired, add the honey for extra sweetness (the shake is already naturally sweet from the barley malt).

Tip: Add the yogurt slowly to help it blend smoothly without lumps.
Blend until smooth and creamy
- Add the ice cubes to the blender.
- Secure the lid and blend on high speed for 45–60 seconds, until the oats are completely broken down and the shake is smooth, creamy, and pale tan in color.
- You should not see any oat particles or graininess when you look at the shake.

Ready when: Smooth, creamy texture with no visible oat particles; pale tan color throughout
Tip: If your blender struggles with the oats, soak them in the milk for 2–3 minutes before adding the ice and blending.
Pour and serve immediately
- Divide the shake evenly between two chilled glasses.
- Serve immediately with a spoon and straw, as this shake is thick and creamy.

Tip: Use a wide straw or spoon to manage the thick, hearty texture.
Good to know
Tips
- For a thicker, more dessert-like shake, use half milk and half Greek yogurt, or add a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
- Toast the rolled oats in a dry skillet over medium heat for 2–3 minutes before blending to deepen their nutty flavor and complement the barley malt.
- Barley malt syrup is thick and sticky; warm it slightly or dip your measuring spoon in warm water to help it release cleanly.
- This shake is hearty enough to serve as a light breakfast or post-workout snack; it provides protein, fiber, and slow-release carbohydrates.
Make ahead
Assemble all ingredients and chill them for up to 1 hour ahead. Blend just before serving for the best texture and temperature.
Storage & reheating
This shake is best enjoyed immediately. Leftover shake can be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 2 hours, though separation may occur; blend or stir vigorously before drinking. Do not freeze.
Substitutions
- vanilla bean → 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or ½ teaspoon vanilla powder. Adds vanilla flavor but lacks the visual speckles and depth of real vanilla bean. Stir into the milk before blending.
- barley malt syrup → 2 tablespoons unsulphured molasses or 1½ tablespoons maple syrup. Molasses gives a deeper, more mineral flavor; maple syrup is lighter and more delicate. Both work well but shift the flavor profile.
- plain Greek yogurt, cold → ⅓ cup heavy cream or whole milk. Reduces protein and tanginess; use heavy cream for richness or extra milk for a lighter shake. Adjust texture as needed.
- whole milk, cold → Oat milk, almond milk, or other plant-based milk. Use an unsweetened variety to preserve the barley malt's subtle sweetness. The shake will be slightly less creamy and rich.
