Steps
Before you start
- Wash and roughly chop the kale, discarding thick center ribs
- Peel, halve, and core the pear(s)
- If using frozen pear, no need to freeze fresh pear separately
- Have your blender clean and ready with the pitcher in place
Prepare ingredients
- Remove the thick center ribs from the kale and roughly chop the leaves into 2–3-inch pieces.
- Peel the pear, cut it in half lengthwise, scoop out the core with a small spoon, and roughly chop into 1-inch chunks.
- If you prefer a thicker smoothie, freeze the fresh pear chunks for at least 2 hours or use pre-frozen pear.

Tip: Removing the kale ribs prevents stringy, bitter flavors and makes the smoothie silky.
Load the blender
- Add the chopped kale first, then the pear pieces, Greek yogurt, almond milk, agave nectar, lemon juice, and ice cubes (if using).
- Pour the almond milk last so the liquid helps the other ingredients move around the blender.

Tip: Layering liquids last reduces the chance of ingredients getting stuck at the bottom.
Blend until smooth
- Secure the lid on the blender and blend on high speed for 45–60 seconds, until the smoothie is completely smooth with no visible kale pieces or ice chunks.
- If the mixture is too thick, add 2–3 tablespoons more almond milk and blend for another 10 seconds.
- The smoothie should be creamy but pourable.

Ready when: No visible kale particles or ice chunks; smoothie is creamy and pourable.
Tip: Don't over-blend; excessive blending can generate heat and break down the yogurt's creamy texture.
Serve immediately
- Pour the smoothie evenly into 2 chilled glasses (about 10 oz each) and serve right away while it's cold and frothy.
- A straw is optional but helpful for thicker smoothies.

Tip: Chilling the glasses beforehand keeps the smoothie cold longer, especially if you're not serving immediately.

Tips
- For a protein boost, add 1 tablespoon of nut butter (almond or peanut) or a scoop of vanilla protein powder. Blend an extra 10 seconds to incorporate.
- If using fresh kale, massage it gently with a bit of lemon juice before blending to tenderize it slightly and reduce any bitterness.
- Freeze pear chunks ahead of time to make the smoothie thicker and icier without diluting it with too much ice.
- If your smoothie is too thick, add liquid 1 tablespoon at a time rather than pouring it all at once; you can always blend more but can't remove excess liquid.
Make ahead
Prepare kale and pear the night before; store in separate airtight containers in the refrigerator. You can also freeze the pear chunks in a freezer bag up to 1 month ahead. The smoothie itself is best made and consumed immediately, but you can blend it up to 2 hours ahead, cover it, and refrigerate—it may separate slightly, so stir or blend again briefly before drinking.
Storage & reheating
Best served immediately. Leftover smoothie can be refrigerated in an airtight container up to 2 hours; stir or briefly reblend before serving. Do not freeze the finished smoothie as the texture becomes grainy. To store kale and pear separately, keep chopped kale in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 3 days; store pear chunks in the freezer up to 1 month.
Substitutions
- unsweetened almond milk, chilled → oat milk, coconut milk, or dairy milk. Oat milk adds creaminess; coconut milk brings tropical notes; dairy milk makes it richer. Adjust volume if needed to reach desired consistency.
- plain Greek yogurt (non-fat or 2%) → plain yogurt or silken tofu. Plain yogurt creates a lighter smoothie; silken tofu adds protein and creaminess without dairy. Use the same amount (½ cup / 125 g).
- ripe pear → green apple, banana, or peach. Green apple provides tartness; banana adds creaminess and thickness; peach brings natural sweetness. Use 1 large fruit (about 200–220 g).
- agave nectar → honey, maple syrup, or date paste. Honey has a warmer note; maple syrup adds earthiness; date paste (blended dates and water) is vegan. Use 1 tablespoon of honey or maple syrup, or 2 tablespoons date paste.
