Ginger Turmeric Milk

A warming, golden-hued milk drink infused with fresh ginger, turmeric, and honey. This blended beverage combines the sharp heat of ginger with the earthy warmth of turmeric, sweetened with honey and chilled with ice. Inspired by Indian wellness traditions, it's equally satisfying as a breakfast drink, afternoon pick-me-up, or soothing evening beverage.

Steps

Before you start
  • Have all ingredients measured and ready
  • Chill milk if you prefer a colder drink
  • Peel ginger fresh just before blending for maximum flavor
  1. Combine all ingredients

    • Pour the cold or room-temperature milk into a blender.
    • Add the roughly chopped fresh ginger, turmeric powder, honey, and ice cubes.
    • Place the lid securely on the blender.

Tip: Peel the ginger fresh rather than using pre-peeled; the flavor will be noticeably sharper and brighter.

  2. Blend until smooth

    • Blend on high speed for 45 to 60 seconds, until the mixture is completely smooth, the ginger is fully broken down, and no small pieces remain visible.
    • The drink should be creamy, golden, and frothy on top.

Ready when: Mixture is smooth, frothy, and uniformly golden with no visible ginger pieces

Tip: If the drink seems too thick or won't blend smoothly, add another 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of milk and blend again.

  3. Strain (optional)

    • For a silkier texture, pour the blended drink through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl, pressing gently on any solids with the back of a spoon.
    • This removes any fibrous ginger bits and creates an ultra-smooth drink.
    • Skip this step if you prefer more texture and body.

Ready when: Liquid flows through sieve; minimal sediment remains

Tip: Straining adds a step but gives a restaurant-quality silky finish that many people prefer.

  4. Serve and garnish

    • Pour the ginger turmeric milk into two serving glasses, dividing evenly.
    • If desired, sprinkle a tiny pinch of ground cinnamon on top of each glass for color and warmth.
    • Serve immediately.

Tip: Drink while cold and frothy. If it sits for more than a minute or two, the foam will settle and ginger may begin to separate.

Good to know

Tips
  • Fresh ginger root is essential—ground ginger lacks the vibrant, sharp bite that makes this drink special. Buy small amounts and store in the freezer for longer shelf life.
  • For a warm version, heat the milk gently in a saucepan over medium-low heat, then blend with the ginger, turmeric, and honey without ice. Serve immediately in warmed glasses. This is comforting in the evening.
  • Turmeric can stain hands and surfaces; wear gloves when peeling ginger if you're concerned, and wipe the blender pitcher right after use.
  • Add a pinch of black pepper to the blender to boost turmeric absorption—a traditional pairing in golden milk.
Storage & reheating

Best served fresh and immediately. If you must store it, cover tightly and refrigerate for up to 8 hours. The drink will separate and lose its creamy texture and froth; stir or re-blend before drinking. Do not freeze.

Substitutions
  • whole milk → oat milk, almond milk, or coconut milk. Use the same volume. Coconut milk will create a richer, slightly tropical flavor; oat milk mimics the creaminess of whole milk most closely.
  • fresh ginger → 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger. Ground ginger is much more concentrated; use one-quarter the amount. The heat will be less sharp and more mellow.
  • honey → maple syrup, agave nectar, or brown sugar syrup. Use the same volume. Each will introduce its own distinctive flavor; honey's floral notes are traditional.
  • ice cubes → frozen milk cubes (freeze milk in ice trays). Prevents dilution as the drink sits, though still works with regular ice if you drink it promptly.
