Steps
Before you start
- Brew the black tea and let it cool to room temperature (about 10 minutes)
- Measure out the ice cream and milk ahead so they're ready to blend
- Lightly crush the cardamom pods to release their aromatic oils
Infuse tea with cardamom
- In a small saucepan, bring 1 cup (240 ml) water to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Add the black tea and crushed cardamom pods.
- Remove from heat, cover, and steep for 3–4 minutes until fragrant and the flavors meld.
- The tea should have a warm, slightly spiced aroma.

Ready when: Tea is fragrant and the cardamom has infused its flavor
Tip: Don't over-steep or the tea will turn bitter. 3–4 minutes is ideal for black tea.
Cool tea completely
- Strain the brewed tea through a fine mesh strainer into a bowl, discarding the tea leaves and cardamom pods.
- Set the strained tea aside at room temperature until cool (about 5–10 minutes).
- You can speed this up by pouring into a shallow dish or placing the bowl in an ice bath.

Ready when: Tea is no longer steaming and feels cool to the touch
Tip: Cool the tea before blending so your milkshake stays thick and creamy instead of becoming watery.
Blend the milkshake
- Add the cooled black tea, cold whole milk, vanilla ice cream, honey, and ice cubes to a blender.
- Blend on high speed for 45–60 seconds until smooth and creamy, with no visible ice chunks.
- The mixture should be pale tan with flecks of cardamom visible.

Ready when: Shake is smooth, creamy, and ice is completely blended
Tip: If the blender is struggling, let the ice cubes sit in the liquid for 30 seconds first to soften slightly. Stop and shake the blender if needed to redistribute ingredients.
Serve immediately
- Pour the milkshake evenly into two chilled glasses (12–16 oz/355–475 ml each).
- Serve right away with a spoon and straw.
- The shake is best enjoyed while cold and creamy.

Good to know
Tips
- Toast the cardamom pods lightly in a dry skillet for 1–2 minutes before crushing them to intensify their fragrance and warm, slightly floral notes.
- For a thicker shake, use 1 ¼ cups (300 ml) ice cream and reduce ice cubes to ¼ cup (60 ml). For a thinner, more drinkable consistency, add 2–3 tablespoons (30–45 ml) extra milk.
- The cardamom flavor will be subtle rather than overpowering. If you prefer a stronger spice note, add ⅛ teaspoon of ground cardamom to the blender, or steep an extra pod.
- This shake pairs wonderfully with Indian sweets like laddu or gulab jamun, or with crispy biscuits for dipping.
Storage & reheating
Best served immediately. If made ahead, store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 2 hours; the texture will become icy rather than creamy as it sits. Stir well or re-blend briefly if separation occurs.
Substitutions
- vanilla ice cream → Salted caramel or honey ice cream. Creates a richer, more complex sweetness that pairs beautifully with cardamom and black tea.
- black tea (such as Assam or Ceylon) → Chai tea blend (without milk or sweetener). Chai will add more spice (cinnamon, clove, ginger) and create a more traditional Indian chai milkshake. Use the same amount.
- honey → Agave nectar or maple syrup (same amount). Both blend smoothly and offer different flavor profiles; use 2 tablespoons (30 ml) of either.
- whole milk, cold → Oat milk, almond milk, or condensed milk (2 ½ tablespoons per ¼ cup for condensed). Oat and almond milk work well for dairy-free; condensed milk adds extra sweetness and richness but reduce honey to 1 tablespoon (15 ml).
