Steps

Before you start
  • Have all ingredients at cool room temperature (cottage cheese and sour cream can come straight from the fridge)
  • Gather your blender or food processor
  • Measure out the ranch seasoning so you can adjust to taste
  1. Blend Cottage Cheese Base

    • Add the cottage cheese and sour cream to a blender or food processor.
    • Blend on medium speed for 1 to 2 minutes, pausing once to scrape down the sides with a rubber spatula.
    • Process until the texture is smooth and creamy with no visible curds.

Ready when: Mixture is smooth, homogeneous, and resembles sour cream in consistency

Tip: Don't overblend or the dip may become too thin. If it looks too thick, you can thin it with 1 to 2 tablespoons of milk or sour cream.

  2. Add Seasoning and Herbs

    • Sprinkle the ranch seasoning mix over the blended cottage cheese mixture.
    • Add the fresh dill (if using) and lemon juice (if using).
    • Pulse or stir gently 3 to 4 times to distribute the seasoning and herbs throughout without overworking the dip.

Ready when: Seasoning and herbs are evenly distributed throughout the dip

Tip: If using dried dill instead of fresh, reduce to 1 teaspoon (1 g) because dried herbs are more concentrated.

  3. Fold in Vegetables

    • Add the thawed, drained frozen vegetables to the dip.
    • Fold them in gently using a rubber spatula or fold setting on the blender, stirring just until the vegetables are evenly distributed throughout.
    • Don't overmix.

Ready when: Vegetables are scattered throughout the dip with no pockets of unmixed ingredients

Tip: Patting the thawed vegetables dry prevents excess water from making the dip watery. If the dip still seems too loose, fold in 1 to 2 additional tablespoons of cottage cheese.

  4. Taste and Season

    • Taste the dip and season with kosher salt and black pepper to your preference.
    • Start with ¼ teaspoon of salt and ⅛ teaspoon of pepper, then adjust.
    • Keep in mind the ranch seasoning is already salty.

Ready when: Flavors are balanced and taste good on a small spoon

Tip: Add salt gradually—it's easier to add more than to remove it. Taste on a vegetable or cracker to get an accurate sense of the seasoning.

  5. Chill and Rest

    • Transfer the dip to a serving bowl.
    • Cover loosely and refrigerate for at least 5 minutes before serving.
    • This allows the flavors to meld and the dip to firm up slightly.

Ready when: Dip is cool and flavors are fully developed

Tip: You can make this dip up to 2 hours ahead; cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Good to know

Tips
  • Use full-fat cottage cheese for the creamiest, richest texture. Low-fat or nonfat versions tend to be watery and won't blend as smoothly.
  • Don't skip thawing and draining the frozen vegetables. Excess ice crystals and water will dilute the dip and make it soupy.
  • Serve with an assortment of fresh vegetables (carrots, celery, cherry tomatoes, bell peppers, radishes), tortilla chips, or pita chips.
  • For a spicier dip, add ⅛ to ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper or hot sauce to taste after blending.
Make ahead

You can prepare this dip up to 2 days ahead. Keep it covered in the refrigerator. Stir gently before serving. If the dip thickens after sitting, fold in 1 to 2 tablespoons of sour cream or milk to restore the creamy texture.

Storage & reheating

Room temperature: Not recommended; serve chilled. Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Freezer: Not recommended; the texture will break down upon thawing.

Substitutions
  • frozen mixed vegetables (peas, corn, carrots, green beans), thawed and drained → 1 cup fresh chopped vegetables (cucumber, bell pepper, cherry tomatoes, radishes) or a combination. Fresh vegetables will add more crunch and won't need thawing. Chop them fine and pat very dry before folding in.
  • sour cream → Greek yogurt (non-fat or full-fat). Yogurt will make the dip slightly tangier and a bit thinner; you may need to use 6 tablespoons instead of ½ cup to maintain thickness.
  • ranch seasoning mix, dry → 1 teaspoon each of garlic powder, onion powder, dried parsley, and dried dill, plus ¼ teaspoon paprika. This blend mimics ranch flavor without store-bought seasoning. Adjust to taste.
  • fresh dill, finely chopped → 1 tablespoon fresh chives, finely chopped, or 1 teaspoon dried chives. Chives add a mild onion-like flavor and work well with the ranch base.
