Steps
Before you start
- Thaw frozen whipped topping in the refrigerator overnight, or for about 4 hours, until soft and spreadable but still cold.
- Chill the Snickers bars in the refrigerator or freezer for 30 minutes so they chop cleanly instead of smearing.
- Use instant pudding mix, not cook-and-serve. The box should say 'instant'.
- Plan for at least 2 hours of chilling so the dressing sets and the flavors blend.
Chill the candy
- Place the 4 Snickers bars in the freezer (or refrigerator) for 30 minutes.
- Chilled bars are firmer, so the caramel and nougat cut cleanly.

Ready when: Bars feel firm and are no longer sticky when pressed
Tip: Don't skip this; room-temperature bars gum up the knife.
Make the pudding base
- In the medium bowl, whisk the pudding mix with ½ cup (120 ml) cold milk for 2 minutes.
- The mixture will be very thick, like paste.
- Add the pinch of salt if using.

Ready when: Thick, smooth, and holds a ribbon when the whisk is lifted, with no dry powder
Tip: Only ½ cup milk is used on purpose. More milk makes a runny dressing.
Fold in whipped topping
- Add the thawed whipped topping to the pudding.
- Fold gently with a rubber spatula, scraping the bottom of the bowl, until completely smooth and uniformly pale, about 1 minute.

Ready when: Fluffy, creamy dressing with no white streaks or pudding lumps
Tip: Fold rather than whisk to keep it airy.
Cut the apples
- Quarter and core the apples, then cut into ¾-inch (2 cm) cubes, leaving the peel on for color and crunch.
- Drop the cubes into the large bowl as you go and toss with 1 tablespoon lemon juice to slow browning.

Ready when: Cubes are even in size and lightly glistening with lemon juice
Tip: Even pieces give every spoonful the same crunch.
Chop the Snickers
- Unwrap the chilled bars and cut each lengthwise into 3 strips, then crosswise into ½-inch (1.25 cm) pieces.
- Wipe the knife with a damp towel whenever caramel builds up.

Ready when: Pieces are roughly ½ inch with peanuts, nougat and caramel visible
Tip: If pieces start sticking together, return them to the freezer for 5 minutes.
Combine the salad
- Scrape the dressing over the apples.
- Fold gently until every apple cube is coated.
- Add the Snickers pieces and fold just until evenly distributed, about 10 turns.

Ready when: Apples are fully coated and candy is evenly scattered, with no pooled dressing
Tip: Overmixing melts the caramel into the dressing and turns it beige.
Chill and serve
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a lid and refrigerate for at least 2 hours (up to 8 hours).
- Stir gently once before serving.

Ready when: Salad is cold, the dressing is thick and clings to the apples
Tip: For the crunchiest candy, you can reserve a handful of pieces to sprinkle on top just before serving.
Good to know
Tips
- Leave the peel on the apples for color and texture, and cut the pieces uniformly so every bite is the same.
- Keep the dressing thick: the small amount of milk is deliberate because apples release juice as the salad sits.
- Fold, don't stir vigorously, to keep the dressing fluffy and the candy intact.
- For a crunchier finish, add some of the candy right before serving.
Make ahead
"Make the salad up to 8 hours ahead and keep covered in the refrigerator. For best texture, stir the Snickers in within 1 hour of serving, or hold some back to sprinkle on top. The dressing alone (pudding and whipped topping) can be made 1 day ahead."
Storage & reheating
"Refrigerator: covered, up to 2 days (the apples soften and release liquid after the first day). Room temperature: no more than 2 hours. Freezer: not recommended, as the dressing becomes watery and the apples turn mushy. Serve cold; stir gently to redistribute any liquid."
Substitutions
- Granny Smith apples → Honeycrisp or Pink Lady apples, or a mix of red and green. Sweeter and less tart; the salad will taste sweeter overall, so consider a little extra lemon juice.
- frozen whipped topping → 2 cups (480 ml) cold heavy cream whipped to stiff peaks with 2 tablespoons powdered sugar. Richer flavor, but it is less stable; serve within 1 day.
- full-size Snickers bars → Twix, Milky Way or peanut butter cups, same weight. Chop while cold. Peanut butter cups give a different but delicious flavor.
- whole milk → Any other milk, such as 2% or oat milk. Whole milk gives the creamiest set.
