Plum Cinnamon Punch
A warming spiced mocktail that combines fresh plum juice with aromatic cinnamon and cloves. The drink is simmered gently to meld the spices, then chilled and served over ice with fresh citrus and optional muddled plums. The balance of tart plums, warm spice, and bright citrus makes it equally at home as a fall gathering drink or a sophisticated non-alcoholic option year-round.

Steps
Before you start
- Have all ingredients measured and ready—this is a quick simmer
- Chill serving glasses in the freezer for at least 15 minutes if possible
- If using fresh plums, choose ripe ones with deep color for better juice extraction
Combine juice and water
- Pour the plum juice and cold water into a medium saucepan (2–3 qt).
- Stir to combine.
Add spices and heat
- Add the broken cinnamon stick pieces and whole cloves to the saucepan.
- Bring to a gentle simmer over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally.
- Once it begins to steam and small bubbles appear at the edges, reduce heat to medium-low.

Ready when: Plum juice steams and small bubbles form at the edge
Tip: Don't boil vigorously—you want a gentle simmer to extract spice flavor without turning the drink bitter.
Simmer to infuse
- Maintain a gentle simmer for 8 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- The spices will perfume the liquid and deepen its color slightly.
- You should smell warm cinnamon and clove throughout the kitchen.

Ready when: Strong spiced aroma, liquid deepened in color
Sweeten and acidify
- Remove the saucepan from heat.
- Stir in the honey and fresh lemon juice until the honey is fully dissolved.
- Taste the punch base—it should be pleasantly sweet with a subtle tartness from the plums and brightness from the lemon.

Ready when: Honey fully dissolved and flavors balanced
Tip: If the punch tastes too tart, add ½ tablespoon more honey. If too sweet, add another squeeze of lemon juice.
Strain and cool
- Pour the punch through a fine-mesh strainer or cheesecloth into a clean pitcher, leaving the cinnamon and cloves behind.
- Let the liquid cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or until very cold.
- This can be done up to 4 hours ahead.

Ready when: Punch is cold to the touch when held
Tip: Straining removes the whole spices so there's no grit in the glass; it also clarifies the drink slightly.
Prepare glassware and garnish
- Fill serving glasses with ice cubes.
- If using fresh plums, you may muddle 1–2 plum halves in the bottom of each glass to release their juice and add visual interest, or simply place a plum half on the rim or in the glass as garnish.

Tip: Chilled glasses keep the punch colder longer and make each sip more refreshing.
Serve and enjoy
- Pour the chilled plum cinnamon punch over the ice and garnishes.
- Stir gently to blend the muddled plum juice if used.
- Serve immediately while the punch is very cold.

Tip: The punch will stay cold for about 1 hour. For longer gatherings, keep the pitcher on ice or in the fridge and pour as needed.
Good to know
Tips
- For a sparkling version, use sparkling water instead of still water (or use ½ cup still and ½ cup sparkling poured in at serving time). This lifts the drink and adds a festive feel.
- If you don't have fresh plum juice, look for bottled unsweetened juice at the grocery store—it's now widely available and produces an equally delicious punch.
- The spice base is quite forgiving: 8 minutes of simmering is the sweet spot. Less time and the spices don't fully bloom; much longer and the clove flavor becomes overpowering.
- To make this punch a signature drink for a gathering, double the batch and serve from a punch bowl with floating ice rings (freeze the punch with a ring mold or in a bundt pan for a beautiful presentation).
Make ahead
The punch base (juice, water, and spices) can be simmered, strained, and chilled up to 4 hours in advance. Store it covered in the refrigerator. Pour over fresh ice and add garnishes just before serving.
Storage & reheating
Refrigerator: Store the chilled punch base in a covered pitcher for up to 3 days. Shake or stir before pouring. Freezer: Not recommended—frozen punch loses its clarity and fresh flavor. Once served over ice, finish within 2–3 hours as the ice will gradually dilute it.
Substitutions
- fresh plum juice or bottled unsweetened plum juice → Damson plum juice or fresh plum-apple blend. These will shift the flavor slightly—damson is more tart, while plum-apple is softer. Taste and adjust honey and lemon accordingly.
- cinnamon sticks → ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon stirred in after cooling. Ground cinnamon dissolves into the liquid; the punch won't be as clear. Reduce amount slightly as ground spice is more potent.
- honey → Maple syrup or agave nectar in equal measure. Maple will add a subtle woodsy note; agave is more neutral. Both dissolve readily in the warm liquid.
- fresh ripe plums → Frozen plum halves (thawed) or dried plum (prune) halves. Frozen plums work as garnish; dried plums add chewiness and won't cloud the punch if kept on the rim rather than muddled.
