Steps

Before you start
  • Chill the sparkling water and orange juice in the fridge for at least 2 hours so the drink stays fizzy and cold.
  • Squeeze the lemon and orange fresh if possible; bottled juice tastes flatter against the turmeric.
  • Turmeric stains countertops, cloths and plastic, so wipe spills right away and use glass or metal where you can.
  • Honey dissolves poorly in cold liquid, so you will make a quick honey-turmeric paste first.
  1. Make turmeric paste

    • In a small bowl, combine the 1 tsp ground turmeric, ⅛ tsp black pepper, 3 tbsp honey and 2 tbsp warm water.
    • Stir with a spoon for about 1 minute, pressing out any clumps against the side of the bowl.

Ready when: Paste is smooth, deep golden-orange and pourable, with no dry yellow specks.

Tip: Using warm water here helps the honey loosen so it blends into the cold juice later.

  2. Add the juices

    • Pour the 1 cup (240 ml) orange juice and ¼ cup (60 ml) lemon juice into the bowl.
    • Whisk or stir for 30 seconds to combine.

Ready when: Mixture is a uniform bright golden color with no streaks of paste at the bottom.

Tip: Taste now. If too tart, stir in 1 more tsp honey.

  3. Let flavors bloom

    • Let the mixture sit at room temperature for 5 minutes so the turmeric hydrates and the pepper's aroma infuses the juice.

Ready when: Color deepens slightly and the mixture smells citrusy with a faint warm spice.

  4. Prepare the glasses

    • Fill two 12 oz (350 ml) highball glasses with 1 cup (140 g) ice each.
    • Set a lemon wheel aside for each glass if using.
    + Show details

Ready when: Glasses are filled about two-thirds with ice.

  5. Shake hard

    • Stir the juice mixture once more, pour it into the shaker, and add 1 cup (140 g) ice.
    • Seal tightly and shake vigorously for 15 seconds.
    + Show details

Ready when: The outside of the shaker is frosty and very cold to the touch, and the liquid looks slightly frothy.

Tip: Do not add the sparkling water to the shaker; it will build pressure and spray.

  6. Strain into glasses

    • Strain the shaken mixture through a fine-mesh strainer, dividing it evenly (about ⅔ cup / 160 ml each) over the ice in the glasses.
    + Show details

Ready when: Each glass is about two-thirds full of golden, lightly foamy liquid.

Tip: Straining catches any pepper flecks and leftover turmeric grit for a smoother sip.

  7. Top with bubbles

    • Slowly pour ½ cup (120 ml) cold sparkling water into each glass.
    • Give one gentle stir with a spoon to combine without losing the fizz.
    + Show details

Ready when: A light foam crowns the drink and bubbles rise steadily.

Tip: Pour down the side of the tilted glass to keep the most carbonation.

  8. Garnish and serve

    • Float a lemon wheel on top of each drink and add a tiny pinch of black pepper over the foam if you like.
    • Serve right away with a straw.

Ready when: Drink is bubbly, bright gold and ice cold.

Tip: Serve within 5 minutes; the fizz fades and turmeric begins to settle as it sits.

Good to know

Tips
  • Black pepper contains piperine, which is traditionally paired with turmeric; keep it in even though the amount is small.
  • Always make the paste before adding cold juice. Turmeric powder added directly to cold liquid clumps and floats.
  • For a sweeter, rounder flavor use pulp-free orange juice from ripe oranges such as Valencia.
  • Rim the glasses with a little honey and sea salt for a party-ready look.
Make ahead

"Mix the paste, orange juice and lemon juice (steps 1–2) up to 24 hours ahead and refrigerate in a sealed jar. Shake the jar well before using, then continue from step 4. Add sparkling water only just before serving."

Storage & reheating

"Best served immediately. Un-sparkled juice base keeps in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 2 days; shake well before using as turmeric settles. Finished drinks should not be stored because they go flat. Not recommended for freezing as a finished drink, but the base can be frozen in ice cube trays for up to 1 month; thaw in the fridge, then shake with ice and top with sparkling water."

Substitutions
  • honey → maple syrup or agave syrup. Use the same amount; makes the drink vegan.
  • ground turmeric → 1 tbsp (about 8 g) freshly grated turmeric root. Stain-prone; grate finely and strain well. Flavor is brighter and slightly more peppery.
  • sparkling water → ginger beer or tonic water. Ginger beer adds sweetness and spice, so reduce honey to 2 tbsp.
  • orange juice → fresh pineapple juice. Gives a tropical flavor; use the same amount.
