Steps
Before you start
- Use frozen mango chunks straight from the freezer for a thick, cold smoothie with no ice needed.
- Shake the can of coconut milk well before opening so the cream and liquid are evenly mixed.
- Turmeric stains: wipe up spills right away and rinse the blender jar soon after blending.
- Peel the ginger by scraping with a spoon edge, then grate it finely so no fibrous bits remain.
Prep the ginger
- Scrape the skin from a ½-inch (1 cm) piece of ginger with the edge of a spoon.
- Grate it on a microplane until you have 1 teaspoon of fine pulp.
- Peel the banana and break it into 3 pieces.

Ready when: Ginger is a fine, wet pulp with no long fibers.
Tip: Grate across the grain; stringy ginger will not fully blend away.
Add liquids first
- Shake the coconut milk can hard, then pour 1 cup (240 ml) into the blender jar.
- Add ½ cup (120 ml) orange juice.

Tip: Liquids on the bottom help the blades catch the frozen fruit and prevent air pockets.
Add spices and fruit
- Add the grated ginger, 1 teaspoon turmeric, ⅛ teaspoon black pepper, the pinch of salt, and the cinnamon and honey if using.
- Top with the banana pieces, then the 2 cups (300 g) frozen mango.

Tip: The black pepper helps your body absorb the curcumin in turmeric, so don't skip it.
Blend until smooth
- Secure the lid.
- Start on low for 15 seconds, then increase to high and blend 45–60 seconds.
- Stop and scrape down the sides with a spatula if mango chunks stick, then blend 15 seconds more.

Ready when: Smoothie is thick, uniformly golden-yellow, with no flecks of turmeric or mango pieces.
Tip: If the blades spin without pulling fruit down, add 2 tablespoons more orange juice.
Taste and adjust
- Taste.
- Add 1 teaspoon honey if you want it sweeter, or a pinch more ginger for more heat.
- Blend 10 seconds to combine.

Good to know
Tips
- Use frozen fruit rather than ice so the smoothie stays creamy and full-flavored.
- Choose fresh, bright-orange ground turmeric; old, dull powder tastes dusty.
- Use full-fat coconut milk for a richer, dessert-like smoothie; thin with 2 tablespoons water if too thick.
- Add 1 scoop of vanilla protein powder or 2 tablespoons Greek yogurt to make it more filling.
Make ahead
"Blend up to 24 hours ahead and store in a sealed jar filled to the top in the fridge. Shake or stir well before drinking, as it will separate and thicken."
Storage & reheating
"Best fresh. Refrigerate in an airtight jar up to 24 hours; shake well before serving. Freeze in ice cube trays or freezer-safe containers up to 3 months; thaw in the fridge overnight or re-blend frozen cubes with a splash of juice or coconut milk."
Substitutions
- canned light coconut milk → unsweetened oat milk or whole dairy milk. Gives a lighter, less tropical result; use the same 1 cup (240 ml).
- frozen mango chunks → frozen pineapple chunks. Tangier and slightly thinner; use the same weight.
- fresh ginger → ¼ teaspoon ground ginger. Milder and less fresh, but convenient.
- honey or maple syrup → 1 pitted Medjool date. Blend well; adds caramel sweetness and keeps the smoothie vegan.
