Blackberry Lime Cooler
A bright, refreshing mocktail that muddles tart blackberries with fresh lime juice and a touch of sugar for natural sweetness. Served over ice with still or sparkling water, it's the perfect thirst-quenching drink for warm afternoons.
Steps
Before you start
- Chill 2 tall glasses with ice or in the freezer for 15 minutes
- Have lime juice freshly squeezed if possible—bottled works but fresh tastes better
- Use fresh, ripe blackberries; frozen ones work too but thaw them first so they muddle easily
Muddle blackberries and sugar
- Place 1 cup (145 g) fresh blackberries and 3 tbsp (37.5 g) cane sugar in a small bowl.
- Using a cocktail muddler or the back of a wooden spoon, gently crush the blackberries for 20–30 seconds until they release their juice and break down slightly.
- You want to see dark purple liquid pooling but still have some berry pieces visible.

Ready when: Berry juices have released and pooled at the bottom of the bowl
Tip: Don't over-muddle; you want texture and some whole berries, not a smooth puree.
Strain and mix base
- Pour the muddled blackberry mixture through a fine-mesh strainer into a medium pitcher, pressing gently on the berries to extract all the juice.
- Add 0.33 cup (80 ml) freshly squeezed lime juice to the pitcher and stir well to combine.
- This blackberry-lime base will be the flavor concentrate.

- Fill the two chilled glasses halfway with ice cubes.
- Divide the blackberry-lime base between the two glasses (about 3 oz each), then top each glass with 0.75 cup (180 ml) of cold still or sparkling water.
- Stir gently to combine.

Tips
- For a boozy version, add 1 oz of white rum or vodka to each serving and reduce the water to 0.5 cup (120 ml) per glass.
- Frozen blackberries work in a pinch; thaw them completely first and drain excess liquid before muddling to avoid over-diluting the drink.
- Make a larger pitcher by multiplying all ingredients by the number of guests and keeping it chilled until just before serving.
- The blackberry-lime base can double as a syrup for pancakes, yogurt, or desserts.
Storage & reheating
Best served fresh immediately. If made ahead, store the blackberry-lime base (without water) in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 8 hours. Add water and ice just before serving. Do not freeze.
Substitutions
- fresh blackberries → raspberries or mixed berries (such as blueberries and blackberries combined). Use the same weight; raspberries are slightly more delicate, so muddle gently. Blueberries will need slightly longer to release juice.
- fresh lime juice → fresh lemon juice. Use the same amount (0.33 cup / 80 ml). The cooler will be brighter and less tart; add an extra 0.5 tbsp sugar if desired.
- still or sparkling water, cold → ginger ale or other flavored sparkling water. Maintains the same volume (1.5 cups / 360 ml) but adds extra flavor and sweetness; reduce sugar to 2.5 tbsp if using sweetened sparkling water.
- cane sugar → agave nectar or honey. Use 2.5 tbsp (30 ml) of liquid sweetener instead. Stir it into the blackberry mixture to dissolve completely before straining.
