Steps
Before you start
- Make simple syrup 1 hour ahead (or use store-bought) and refrigerate until cold
- Chill all juices and sparkling water before mixing
- Prepare lime and orange slices for garnish and set aside
- If using a salt-sugar rim, mix 2 tablespoons salt with 1 tablespoon sugar on a small plate
Make or chill simple syrup
- If making fresh simple syrup, combine equal parts sugar and water (½ cup each) in a small saucepan over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves, about 2 minutes.
- Do not boil.
- Pour into a heatproof container and refrigerate until completely cold, at least 1 hour.
- If using store-bought syrup, ensure it is chilled before use.

Ready when: Syrup is clear and fully cooled
Tip: Make syrup ahead so it has time to chill; warm syrup will melt the ice and dilute the punch
Prepare citrus garnish
- Wash and dry 2 limes and 1 orange.
- On a cutting board, slice each lime and orange into thin wheels, removing any seeds.
- Arrange on a small plate and refrigerate until ready to use.

Ready when: Wheels are evenly sliced and free of seeds
Tip: Slice wheels just before serving to keep them fresh; they'll brown slightly if cut too early
Combine juices and syrup
- Pour the 1 cup (240 ml) cold fresh lime juice and 1.5 cups (360 ml) cold fresh orange juice into the punch bowl.
- Add the ¾ cup (180 ml) chilled simple syrup and stir well with a large spoon, mixing for about 1 minute until fully combined.

Ready when: Ingredients are fully incorporated and no syrup streaks remain
Tip: Stir thoroughly so the syrup is evenly distributed and won't settle at the bottom
Add ice to punch bowl
- Add 3 cups (500 g) ice cubes to the punch bowl, stirring gently for 30 seconds to chill the mixture without diluting it too quickly.

Ready when: Punch is thoroughly chilled and ice remains intact
Tip: Add ice just before serving; if punch sits with ice too long, melting will dilute the flavors
Finish with sparkling water
- Just before serving, pour the 1.5 quarts (1400 ml) ice-cold sparkling water into the punch bowl, stirring gently with a large spoon for 10–15 seconds to incorporate the carbonation without deflating it.

Ready when: Sparkling water is evenly mixed throughout and bubbles are visible
Tip: Add sparkling water last and stir gently to preserve the fizz; vigorous stirring releases carbonation
Garnish and serve
- Float the lime and orange wheels on the surface of the punch.
- If using a salt-sugar rim, dampen the rim of each serving glass with lime juice and dip into the salt-sugar mixture, then fill with 8 oz (240 ml) of punch and 1 ice cube.
- Serve immediately with a ladle and encourage guests to enjoy a citrus wheel with each sip.

Ready when: Glasses are rimmed and punch is poured
Tip: Serve immediately after adding sparkling water so guests enjoy maximum fizz; keep extra ice nearby in case the punch dilutes during the party
Good to know
Tips
- Fresh-squeezed lime and orange juice make a dramatic difference in flavor—if possible, juice the citrus yourself rather than using bottled juice
- Chill all ingredients, especially the sparkling water and juices, before mixing; this keeps the punch cold without requiring excessive ice that will dilute it
- Prepare the salt-sugar rim ahead by mixing coarse salt and sugar on a plate, then dampen each glass rim with lime juice right before filling to prevent the rim from getting soggy
- To prevent the punch from becoming diluted during a long party, use a frozen block of juice (freeze ½ cup orange juice in a small bowl) instead of ice cubes; as it melts, it will refresh the punch flavor
Make ahead
Simple syrup can be made up to 2 days ahead and stored in the refrigerator. Lime and orange juices can be squeezed up to 4 hours ahead and refrigerated in separate containers. Do not combine juices with syrup or add sparkling water more than 15 minutes before serving, or carbonation will be lost and the punch may start to dilute.
Storage & reheating
Leftover punch (without sparkling water) can be refrigerated in a covered pitcher for up to 2 days. Stir well and re-chill before serving. Add fresh sparkling water if you'd like to refresh the carbonation. Punch does not freeze well due to the high juice and water content.
Substitutions
- fresh lime juice, strained → bottled fresh-squeezed lime juice. Use the same amount (1 cup / 240 ml). Bottled juice is convenient but slightly less vibrant in flavor; strain if pulpy.
- fresh orange juice, strained → bottled fresh-squeezed orange juice. Use the same amount (1.5 cups / 360 ml). Choose pulp-free or strain if you prefer a clearer punch.
- sparkling water or club soda → ginger ale or lemon-lime soda. Use the same volume (1.5 quarts / 1400 ml). Soda will add sweetness, so reduce simple syrup to ½ cup (120 ml) to avoid over-sweetening.
- simple syrup (1:1 ratio sugar to water) → agave nectar or honey. Use ½ cup (120 ml) agave or honey. Honey adds richer flavor but may be slightly less clear; warm gently before mixing if too thick.
