Steps

Before you start
  • Use ripe passion fruits with wrinkled skin for the best flavor and juice yield
  • Chill the orange juice and water ahead of time if possible
  • Have a pitcher or large mixing bowl ready
  • If using fresh passion fruits, halve and scoop the pulp and seeds into a fine-mesh strainer to separate juice from seeds
  1. Combine passion fruit and citrus

    • Pour the strained passion fruit pulp into a large pitcher or bowl.
    • Add the cold orange juice and lime juice (if using).
    • Stir well to combine and distribute the passion fruit flavor evenly throughout.

Ready when: Mixture is well combined and uniform in color

Tip: If you prefer a less tart punch, reduce the lime juice to 1 tablespoon; add more after tasting if needed

  2. Add water and sugar

    • Pour the cold water into the pitcher and add the granulated sugar.
    • Stir continuously for 1–2 minutes until the sugar is completely dissolved.
    • Taste the punch and adjust sweetness with a bit more sugar if needed, stirring until fully dissolved.

Ready when: Sugar is no longer visible and the liquid is clear

Tip: Dissolve sugar completely now so the punch doesn't taste grainy once it's chilled

  3. Chill the punch

    • Refrigerate the punch for at least 15 minutes so flavors meld and the mixture becomes very cold.
    • This also allows any sediment from the passion fruit to settle slightly.

Ready when: Punch is very cold and flavors have married

Tip: You can make this up to 4 hours ahead; stir gently before serving

  4. Serve with ice

    • Fill 6 glasses with ice cubes.
    • Gently stir the chilled punch and pour about 8 fl oz (240 ml) into each glass.
    • Serve immediately.

Good to know

Tips
  • To extract juice from fresh passion fruits, cut them in half and scoop the pulp and seeds into a fine-mesh strainer. Press gently with a spoon to release the juice, leaving most seeds behind; this keeps the punch smooth without the hard seeds
  • For a party, this recipe doubles or triples easily—just maintain the same proportions and scale all quantities accordingly
  • If passion fruit is hard to find, frozen passion fruit pulp (available in the frozen fruit section or online) works just as well and is often less expensive
  • Add a splash of sparkling water just before serving for a lighter, fizzy version
Make ahead

Prepare the punch up to 4 hours ahead; store in a covered pitcher in the refrigerator. Stir gently before serving and pour over fresh ice.

Storage & reheating

Store in a covered pitcher in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. The punch will keep its bright flavor and color best if consumed within 1–2 days. Do not freeze. Serve chilled over ice each time.

Substitutions
  • passion fruit pulp (fresh or frozen) → Passion fruit juice concentrate (use ⅔ cup / 160 ml, diluted according to package directions, then strained). Concentrate is less tart; adjust sugar to taste after mixing
  • fresh orange juice, cold → Fresh tangerine or clementine juice. Slightly sweeter than orange juice; use the same amount but reduce sugar by 1–2 tablespoons and taste before adding more
  • cold water → Sparkling water or club soda (added just before serving). For a fizzy version, use 1 cup still water in the base, then top glasses with sparkling water; reduces sweetness slightly
  • fresh lime juice → Fresh lemon juice. Will add brightness with less tartness than lime; use the same amount or adjust to taste
