Steps
Before you start
- Set the cream cheese out for 1 hour so it is fully soft; cold cream cheese leaves lumps in the filling.
- Thaw the whipped topping in the refrigerator overnight, or for about 4 hours, until soft and spreadable.
- Plan on at least 4 hours of chilling so the layers set and slice cleanly; overnight is even better.
- Use cold milk and instant pudding mix (not cook-and-serve), or the pudding will not set.
Crush the cookies
- Place all 36 Oreos, filling and all, in a food processor and pulse in short bursts for about 30 seconds until they look like coarse, damp soil with a few pea-size bits.
- If using a bag, seal it and crush with a rolling pin.
- Measure out ½ cup (about 60 g) of crumbs into a small bowl and set aside for the topping.

Ready when: Crumbs are uniformly fine with no whole cookie pieces larger than a pea.
Tip: Do not over-process or the filling will turn the crumbs into a paste.
Cream the base
- In a large bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and softened butter with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes, scraping the bowl once.
- Add the powdered sugar and vanilla and beat on low, then medium, for 1 more minute.

Ready when: Mixture is smooth, fluffy, and pale with no visible lumps of cream cheese.
Tip: Fully soft cream cheese is the key to a lump-free filling.
Make the pudding
- In a medium bowl, whisk the cold milk and both packages of instant pudding mix for 2 minutes until thickened.

Ready when: Pudding is thick and holds a ribbon on the surface of the whisk; it will not run when the bowl is tilted.
Tip: Whisk the full 2 minutes; under-mixed pudding will not set properly.
Combine the filling
- Add the set pudding to the cream cheese mixture and beat on low speed for 30 seconds until combined.
- Add the thawed whipped topping and gently fold with a rubber spatula until no white streaks remain.

Ready when: Filling is uniform, light, and fluffy with no streaks of pudding or whipped topping.
Tip: Fold by hand rather than mixing; a mixer deflates the whipped topping and makes the layers runny.
Build the first layers
- Press about half of the remaining crumbs (about 2 cups / 120 g) in an even layer across the bottom of a 9×13-inch dish.
- Spoon half of the filling on top and spread gently to the edges with an offset or rubber spatula.

Ready when: Filling layer is level and reaches all four corners.
Tip: Drop the filling in spoonfuls and spread, rather than dragging it, so the crumbs stay in place.
Add the second layers
- Sprinkle the rest of the crumbs (except the ½ cup set aside) evenly over the filling.
- Top with the remaining filling and spread it smooth to the edges.

Ready when: Two distinct filling layers separated by a crumb layer.
Top with dirt
- Scatter the reserved ½ cup of crumbs evenly over the top to look like soil.
- Cover the dish tightly with plastic wrap or a lid, being careful not to press on the crumbs.

Ready when: Top is fully covered in an even, dark layer of crumbs.
Tip: Hold the plastic slightly above the surface with a few toothpicks if you want to keep the crumbs undisturbed.
Chill until set
- Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, or overnight, until the filling is firm enough to hold a clean scoop or slice.

Ready when: Filling is firm when the edge is gently touched and does not slump when scooped.
Tip: Chilling overnight gives the creamiest texture and softest cookie layers.
Decorate and serve
- Just before serving, poke the gummy worms into the top so they look like they are crawling out of the dirt.
- Scoop or cut into 15 squares and serve cold.

Ready when: Worms are arranged on top and the dessert is cold.
Tip: Add the worms right before serving; they become sticky and weep color if left on for hours.
Good to know
Tips
- Use the cookies with the filling; it helps the crumbs clump and tastes great.
- Spread the filling gently over the crumbs so they don't mix into the cream layer.
- For individual servings, layer in clear cups and top with a gummy worm or a mini flower pot.
- Soften the cream cheese fully before starting to avoid white lumps in the filling.
Make ahead
"Assemble up to 24 hours ahead and keep covered in the refrigerator. For the crunchiest crumbs, hold back the top ½ cup of crumbs and sprinkle them on just before serving. Add gummy worms right before serving."
Storage & reheating
"Room temperature: no more than 2 hours, since the filling contains dairy. Refrigerator: covered, up to 4 days; the crumbs soften more each day. Freezer: not recommended, as the filling turns watery when thawed. Serve straight from the refrigerator; no reheating needed."
Substitutions
- frozen whipped topping (such as Cool Whip) → 2 cups (480 ml) cold heavy cream whipped to stiff peaks with 2 tablespoons sugar. Gives a richer, less sweet result; fold in gently and expect a slightly softer set.
- instant vanilla pudding mix → Instant French vanilla or cheesecake pudding mix. Same quantity; changes the flavor slightly but sets the same.
- Oreo cookies (regular, with filling) → Golden Oreos or chocolate sandwich cookies from another brand. Use the same weight; golden Oreos give a 'sand cake' look.
- whole milk → 2% milk. Works fine; avoid skim or non-dairy milks, which can set softly.
