Mediterranean Yogurt Dip
A bright, herbaceous yogurt dip perfect for entertaining or a simple appetizer. This no-cook recipe combines creamy Greek yogurt with fresh lemon, garlic, and a generous mix of dill, mint, and parsley for vibrant Mediterranean flavor. Serve with warm pita, fresh vegetables, or crackers.
Steps
Before you start
- Wash and thoroughly dry fresh herbs before chopping—wet herbs will dilute the dip and mute its fresh flavor
- Choose full-fat Greek yogurt for the best creamy texture and richness
- Have fresh lemon juice (preferably freshly squeezed) on hand rather than bottled
- Gather all ingredients and equipment before beginning; this quick recipe moves smoothly with mise en place
Wash and chop fresh herbs
- Rinse the dill, mint, and parsley under cold running water.
- Lay them on a clean kitchen towel and pat dry thoroughly—wet herbs will dilute the final dip and mute its flavor.
- Once completely dry, finely chop all the herbs and set aside in a small bowl.

Mince garlic and extract juice
- Peel the 3 garlic cloves and mince them finely with a sharp knife.
- Set aside.
- Halve a fresh lemon and juice it through a citrus juicer or by squeezing by hand, straining out seeds and pulp, to yield 2 tablespoons of juice.

Add fresh herbs

- Use folding motions—not stirring—to keep the herbs intact and vibrant green.
- Mix until the herbs are evenly distributed throughout, and the dip is speckled with green.

Season and adjust
- Add the kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to the dip and stir gently to combine.
- Taste the dip and adjust the seasoning: add more salt if needed, more lemon juice for brightness, or more garlic for punch.
- If using ground cumin, add a small pinch now and taste—cumin adds earthiness.
- For a gentle heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes.
- These spices are optional and should be added to taste.

Tip: Taste as you season; flavors vary with herb freshness and oil quality
Chill and serve
- Transfer the dip to a serving bowl.
- You can serve immediately, but it tastes best after chilling for at least 15 minutes in the refrigerator—the flavors will meld and develop into something richer and more cohesive.
- Just before serving, drizzle a little extra olive oil over the top and add a small sprinkle of fresh herb garnish or paprika if desired.
- Serve with warm pita bread, fresh vegetables (cucumber slices, bell pepper strips, radishes, cherry tomatoes), or crackers.
Good to know
Tips
- Quality ingredients shine here: use full-fat Greek yogurt, truly fresh herbs, good extra-virgin olive oil, and freshly squeezed lemon juice for the best flavor
- Don't skip the 15-minute chill—the flavors develop and meld beautifully into something greater than the sum of its parts. If you must serve immediately, the dip still tastes good, just less integrated
- Serve at a cool (not icy-cold) temperature so flavors come through clearly. If refrigerated, remove from the fridge 10 minutes before serving
- Customize the herbs to your taste: dill is classic for Mediterranean style, but you can use basil, oregano, chives, or whatever fresh herbs you have on hand
Make ahead
The dip can be made up to 24 hours in advance. Complete all steps through step 5 (seasoning), cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate. The flavors will deepen as it sits. Gently stir and adjust seasoning to taste just before serving.
Storage & reheating
Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to 4 days. The dip will thicken slightly as it chills. Room temperature: Not recommended; always serve chilled or cool. Freezer: Not recommended; yogurt does not freeze well and will separate upon thawing. To serve: Stir gently before serving. If the dip has become too thick, thin it with a splash of fresh lemon juice or a touch of cold water.
Substitutions
- Greek yogurt, full-fat or 2% → Labneh (strained yogurt) or sour cream. Labneh is thicker and more intensely flavored—use slightly less. Sour cream works but will taste tangier and less rich.
- Fresh dill → Dried herbs (dill, oregano, or Italian blend). Use about 1 teaspoon total dried herbs instead of fresh. Dried herbs are more concentrated, so use sparingly. The result will be less vibrant but still delicious.
- Fresh lemon juice → Lime juice or white wine vinegar. Lime juice adds a different but equally pleasant brightness. White wine vinegar is more tart; use only 1 tablespoon to avoid overpowering the dip.
- Extra-virgin olive oil → Avocado oil or light vegetable oil. Avocado oil has a similar richness and works well. Neutral oils lack olive's distinctive flavor but are fine if you prefer a subtler taste.
