Steps

Before you start
  • Chill your drinking glasses in the freezer for 10 minutes
  • Use ripe bananas (with yellow skin and brown speckles) for best sweetness and texture
  • Have all ingredients cold or use ice to chill the drink
  1. Combine base ingredients

    • Pour the 1 cup (240 ml) of cold milk into the blender.
    • Add the 2 tablespoons (30 g) of honey and 0.75 teaspoon (3.75 ml) of vanilla extract.
    • If using a pinch of salt, add it now.

Tip: Adding liquid first helps the blender run smoothly and prevents the banana from sticking to the blades.

  2. Add banana and ice

    • Add the 1 large (150 g) banana chunks and 1 cup (200 g) of ice cubes to the blender.
    • Do not blend yet.

Tip: Frozen banana chunks work especially well here and naturally chill the drink without watering it down as much.

  3. Blend until smooth

    • Secure the blender lid firmly.
    • Start on low speed for 5 seconds to break up the banana, then increase to medium-high and blend for 20–30 seconds until the mixture is completely smooth with no visible banana chunks and the ice is fully incorporated.
    • The drink should look creamy and pale tan.

Ready when: Smoothie is thick, creamy, and ice is fully blended with no chunks visible; texture is uniform throughout.

Tip: Overblending can aerate the drink too much and make it foamy. Stop as soon as smooth; don't blend longer than 40 seconds total.

  4. Pour and serve immediately

    • Pour the smoothie evenly into the 2 chilled glasses.
    • Serve right away while still cold and thick.

Tip: Pre-chilled glasses help the drink stay cold longer and prevent it from separating as it sits.

Good to know

Tips
  • For a thicker smoothie bowl consistency, reduce the milk to ¾ cup (180 ml) and top with granola, sliced banana, or coconut flakes.
  • If the drink is too thick, add 2–4 tablespoons (30–60 ml) more milk and re-blend briefly. If too thin, add a handful more ice and blend again.
  • Overripe bananas (mostly brown skin) blend more smoothly and are naturally sweeter, requiring less honey.
  • For a protein boost, stir in 1–2 tablespoons (15–30 g) of plain Greek yogurt or protein powder before blending.
Storage & reheating

Best enjoyed immediately. If you must store, cover and refrigerate for up to 2 hours, though the texture will become thinner and slightly separated as the ice melts. Stir well before drinking.

Substitutions
  • whole milk, cold → Almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk. Use unsweetened or lightly sweetened varieties so you can control the overall sweetness. Oat milk gives the creamiest result.
  • honey → Agave nectar, maple syrup, or white granulated sugar. Use the same amount by weight or volume. Adjust honey to 1½ tablespoons if using granulated sugar, as it's less soluble.
  • pure vanilla extract → Almond extract. Use only ½ teaspoon almond extract, as it has a stronger flavor than vanilla.
  • ripe bananas, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks → Fresh frozen banana (frozen at home and thawed slightly). Frozen banana makes the drink thicker and colder. Thaw for 2–3 minutes before blending if your blender is not high-powered.
