Steps

Before you start
  • Use ripe avocados: the skin should be dark and the flesh should yield to gentle pressure. Underripe fruit makes a bitter, grainy shake.
  • Chill the milk and the serving glasses for 15 minutes if you can, so the shake stays cold and thick longer.
  • Wet or lightly oil your spoon before measuring condensed milk so it slides off easily.
  • Serve right away. Avocado browns and the shake thins as the ice melts.
  1. Chill the glasses

    • Place 2 tall glasses in the freezer or fridge while you prep.
    • Measure the milk and keep it cold until needed.

Ready when: Glasses feel cool to the touch.

  2. Prep the avocados

    • Cut each avocado lengthwise around the pit and twist the halves apart.
    • Remove the pit, then scoop the flesh out with a large spoon, scraping close to the skin to get the greenest flesh.
    • You should have about 1 cup (230 g).
    • Roughly chop it into chunks.

Ready when: Flesh is bright green and creamy with no brown or stringy patches.

Tip: Cut away any brown spots; they taste bitter and dull the color.

  3. Load the blender

    • Add the milk, 4 tablespoons condensed milk, and the lime juice (if using) to the blender first.
    • Add the avocado chunks, then the ice on top.

Ready when: All ingredients are in the jar, ice on top.

Tip: Liquids first helps the blades catch the ice and avocado without stalling.

  4. Blend until smooth

    • Start on low for 10 seconds, then blend on high for 45–60 seconds.
    • Stop and scrape down the sides once if needed.
    • The shake should be thick, pale green, and completely smooth with no ice chips or avocado flecks.

Ready when: Thick like soft-serve, pale green, with no visible ice chunks or avocado lumps.

Tip: If the blender stalls, add 2 tablespoons more milk. If too thin, add 3–4 more ice cubes and blend 15 seconds.

  5. Taste and adjust

    • Taste the shake.
    • If you want it sweeter, add 1 more tablespoon condensed milk and blend 10 seconds to combine.

Ready when: Tastes lightly sweet and rich, with avocado still the main flavor.

  6. Serve immediately

    • Drizzle 1 teaspoon condensed milk around the inside of each chilled glass, if using.
    • Pour in the shake, dividing evenly, and serve at once with wide straws or long spoons.

Ready when: Shake holds a soft mound at the top of the glass.

Tip: Serve within 10 minutes; it thickens and darkens as it sits.

Tips
  • Ripe fruit is the biggest factor: pick avocados that give slightly when pressed at the stem end.
  • Add the ice last so the blades don't dilute the shake before the avocado is smooth.
  • For a more street-style texture, use less ice (1 cup / 130 g) and serve with a spoon.
  • Blend in short bursts if your blender is small, so the motor doesn't overheat and warm the shake.
Storage & reheating

Best drunk immediately. Refrigerate leftovers in a sealed jar filled to the top for up to 4 hours; stir or re-blend before drinking. Freeze in an ice cube tray for up to 1 month, then re-blend with a splash of milk. Do not leave at room temperature for more than 30 minutes.

Substitutions
  • whole milk → unsweetened oat or soy milk. Makes a dairy-free shake; also use coconut condensed milk.
  • sweetened condensed milk → 3 tablespoons honey or sugar syrup. Less creamy; add an extra splash of milk for body.
  • ice cubes → 1 cup frozen avocado chunks. Gives a thicker, richer shake with less dilution; reduce milk slightly.
  • fresh lime juice → lemon juice. Same amount; keeps the color bright.
