Steps
Before you start
- Freeze the banana slices for at least 2 hours for the thickest shake, or use the 10-minute quick chill in step 2 if you forgot.
- Chill the milk and serving glasses so the shake stays cold and thick.
- Choose bananas that are yellow with a few brown freckles; green ones taste starchy and very brown ones turn the shake beige-gray.
- No oven or stove is needed; this recipe is entirely blended and served cold.
Prep the bananas
- Peel the 2 ripe bananas and slice them into ½-inch (1.25 cm) rounds.
- Even slices blend faster and more smoothly.

Ready when: Slices are roughly uniform in thickness.
Tip: Use bananas with a few brown freckles for the sweetest, most aromatic flavor.
Chill the banana
- Spread the slices in a single layer on a plate or small tray and freeze until firm on the outside, at least 10 minutes for a quick chill or up to 2 hours for a thicker shake.
- Meanwhile, put the glasses in the freezer or fridge.

Ready when: Slices feel cold and firm to the touch; they may be fully frozen if left longer.
Tip: Single layer matters; piled slices freeze into a clump that stalls the blender.
Soften the ice cream
- About 3 minutes before blending, take the vanilla ice cream out of the freezer so it blends without needing extra liquid.

Ready when: A scoop pulls away easily with slight give.
Load the blender
- Pour the 1½ cups (360 ml) cold milk into the blender first, then add the vanilla extract and pinch of salt.
- Add the chilled banana slices and 2 scoops of ice cream on top.

Tip: Liquid on the bottom helps the blades catch the frozen ingredients and prevents air pockets.
Blend until smooth
- Secure the lid and blend on low for 10 seconds, then increase to high for 30–45 seconds.
- Stop and scrape down the sides if banana pieces cling to the jar.

Ready when: The shake is completely smooth, pale yellow, and pourable like thick cream, with no banana chunks.
Tip: Don't over-blend; heat from the motor will thin the shake. If too thick, add milk 1 tablespoon (15 ml) at a time.
Taste and adjust
- Taste the shake.
- Add the condensed milk for sweetness if you like (or an extra pinch of salt to sharpen the banana flavor), then pulse 3–5 seconds to combine.

Ready when: Flavor is gently sweet, with clear banana and vanilla notes.
Tip: Ripe bananas vary a lot in sweetness, so always taste before serving.
Serve right away
- Divide the milkshake between the two chilled glasses and serve immediately with wide straws or long spoons.

Ready when: Shake is thick enough to coat a spoon but still sips through a wide straw.
Tip: Serve within 10 minutes; it thins and separates as it warms.

Tips
- For the authentic pale, creamy look of Korean banana milk, use ripe but not heavily spotted bananas and avoid adding cinnamon or chocolate.
- Freezing the banana instead of adding ice keeps the flavor concentrated and the texture silky.
- A pinch of salt is small but makes the banana taste sweeter and rounder.
- For a thinner, drinkable banana-milk style, increase milk to 2 cups (480 ml) and skip the ice cream.
Make ahead
Freeze the banana slices up to 1 month ahead in a zip-top bag, laid flat. Blend straight from frozen, adding a splash more milk if needed.
Storage & reheating
Best drunk immediately. Refrigerate leftovers in a sealed jar up to 24 hours; shake well before drinking, as it will thin and may darken slightly. Freeze in an ice cube tray up to 1 month and re-blend with a splash of milk. Do not leave at room temperature more than 1 hour.
Substitutions
- whole milk → unsweetened oat milk or soy milk. Gives a dairy-free option; use dairy-free ice cream too. Result is slightly less rich.
- vanilla ice cream → 1 extra frozen banana plus 2 tbsp (30 ml) heavy cream. Lighter, more banana-forward shake; add condensed milk for sweetness.
- sweetened condensed milk → 1 tbsp (20 g) honey or 2 tsp (8 g) sugar. Blend well so the sugar dissolves.
- pure vanilla extract → ¼ tsp vanilla bean paste. Adds tiny vanilla flecks and slightly stronger flavor.
