About Shrimp
Shrimp are mild, a little sweet, and ready in minutes. They turn pink and curl when done. Garlic, butter, lemon, and a pinch of spice are all they need, and they fit nicely into pasta, rice, tacos, soups and stir-fries.
Compared with scallops, shrimp are easier to find and easier on the budget, and they are more forgiving in a busy pan. Unlike crab, you do not need to pick through shells at the table. Unlike mussels and calamari, they stay firm and juicy with very little fuss.
Questions folks ask
How long do shrimp take to cook?
Most shrimp cook in about two to four minutes, depending on size. They are done when they turn pink and opaque.
Should I buy shrimp with the shell on?
Either works. Shell-on shrimp add more flavor, while peeled ones save time. Peeled and deveined is the easiest for weeknights.
What goes well with shrimp?
Garlic, lemon, butter, rice, pasta, tomatoes and fresh herbs are all good partners.

- Cook them just until pink and curled into a loose C. A tight O means overdone.
- Leave the tails on for looks, or take them off for easy eating.

- Add garlic near the end so it does not burn.
