About Low Sodium

Low sodium recipes cut back on salt and on salty packaged foods. Instead they lean on fresh ingredients and bold seasonings like garlic, onion, pepper, paprika, cumin, fresh herbs, lemon, and vinegar.

Much of the salt in our meals comes from canned soups, sauces, deli meats, and snacks. So these recipes often start from scratch with unsalted broth and fresh or no-salt-added ingredients. This section is about salt only. A dish here may not be low in calories or fat.

Questions folks ask

How can I make food taste good without salt?

Use garlic, onion, herbs, spices, citrus, and vinegar. Browning foods well also builds flavor.

Does rinsing canned beans help?

Yes, rinsing washes away some of the salty liquid they are packed in.

Where does most sodium hide in food?

Often in packaged and prepared foods like canned soups, sauces, cured meats, and snacks. Checking labels helps.

  • Rinse canned beans and vegetables under water before using.
  • Finish a dish with lemon juice or vinegar to make flavors pop.
