Slow Cooker Grape Jelly Meatballs

From the MyKitchenBank Kitchen

Frozen meatballs simmer in a sweet, tangy glaze of grape jelly and chili sauce, with a little Worcestershire, mustard and lemon to keep it balanced. Dump, stir, and let the slow cooker do the work. A classic potluck and game-day appetizer.

Steps

Before you start
  • Use fully cooked frozen meatballs (about 1-inch / 2.5 cm). Do not thaw them; they go in straight from the freezer.
  • Use a 4- to 6-quart (3.8- to 5.7-liter) slow cooker. Lightly spray the insert if you want easier cleanup.
  • Use grape jelly, not grape jam; jelly melts into a smooth sauce. Use bottled tomato-based chili sauce (such as Heinz), not Asian sweet chili sauce or hot sauce.
  • Plan for 4 hours on LOW or 2 hours on HIGH, plus a few minutes to thicken the sauce at the end.
  1. Prepare the slow cooker

    • Lightly coat the inside of a 4- to 6-quart (3.8- to 5.7-liter) slow cooker insert with nonstick spray, or leave it uncoated if you prefer.
    • Keep the meatballs frozen in the freezer until the next step.

Ready when: Insert is clean and ready.

Tip: Don't thaw the meatballs; thawed ones turn soft and can fall apart during the long cook.

  2. Whisk the sauce

    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the grape jelly, chili sauce, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, lemon juice and hot sauce (if using).
    • Whisk firmly for about 1 minute, pressing the jelly against the bowl to break it up.
    • Small lumps of jelly are fine; they will melt in the slow cooker.

Ready when: Mixture is mostly smooth, deep purple-red, with only small jelly flecks.

Tip: Microwaving the jelly for 20 seconds first makes it whisk in more easily.

  3. Combine with meatballs

    • Add the frozen meatballs to the slow cooker.
    • Pour the sauce over the top and stir gently with a large spoon or spatula until every meatball is coated.

Ready when: No dry or uncoated meatballs are visible.

  4. Slow cook

    • Cover and cook on LOW for 4 hours (or HIGH for 2 hours), stirring gently once about halfway through.
    • The meatballs are ready when they are steaming hot all the way through and the sauce is bubbling around the edges.

Ready when: Meatballs reach 165°F (74°C) in the center; sauce is hot, glossy and bubbling at the edges.

Tip: Resist lifting the lid often; each peek adds about 15–20 minutes of cooking time.

  5. Thicken the sauce

    • If the sauce looks thin, whisk the cornstarch and cold water in a small bowl until smooth.
    • Stir it into the sauce, turn the slow cooker to HIGH, cover, and cook 10–15 minutes.
    • Skip this step if the sauce already coats the back of a spoon.

Ready when: Sauce is glossy and coats the back of a spoon, leaving a clear line when you run a finger through it.

Tip: Always mix cornstarch with cold water first; adding it directly to hot sauce makes lumps.

  6. Garnish and serve

    • Taste the sauce and add a few more drops of hot sauce or a squeeze of lemon if you want more tang or heat.
    • Sprinkle with chopped parsley, switch the slow cooker to WARM or LOW, and serve with toothpicks.

Ready when: Meatballs are hot, glazed and shiny.

Tip: Stir occasionally on warm so the sauce on top doesn't dry out.

Good to know

Tips
  • Stir gently, especially near the end, so the meatballs keep their shape.
  • For a smoky twist, add ½ teaspoon smoked paprika or a splash of bourbon to the sauce.
  • Cooking on LOW gives the best texture; HIGH works but check for scorching near the edges.
  • Make sure the jar says chili sauce (a ketchup-like condiment), not sweet Thai chili sauce, which would make the glaze too thin and sugary.
Make ahead

"Whisk the sauce up to 3 days ahead and refrigerate in a covered container. You can also cook the meatballs fully, cool, and refrigerate up to 2 days, then rewarm on LOW for 1–2 hours before the party."

Storage & reheating

"Room temperature: no more than 2 hours (or 1 hour above 90°F/32°C); on WARM in the slow cooker it can stay out up to 4 hours if kept steaming hot. Fridge: airtight container up to 4 days. Freezer: up to 3 months in a freezer-safe container with sauce. Reheat in the slow cooker on LOW for 1–2 hours, or in a covered saucepan over medium-low heat for 10–15 minutes, adding a splash of water if thick, until 165°F (74°C)."

Substitutions
  • grape jelly → Cranberry sauce (jellied, smooth) or apricot preserves. Cranberry gives a tarter holiday version; apricot is sweeter and fruitier. Use the same amount.
  • bottled tomato-based chili sauce → Ketchup plus 1 tsp extra hot sauce or a pinch of cayenne. Slightly sweeter and less spiced; use 1 cup (240 g).
  • fully cooked frozen meatballs (about 1-inch / 2.5 cm) → Fully cooked frozen turkey or plant-based meatballs. Plant-based ones are more delicate, so stir gently and cook only 2–3 hours on LOW.
  • cornstarch → Arrowroot powder (same amount) or simply leave the lid off for the last 30 minutes. Both thicken the sauce without changing the flavor.
