Steps
Before you start
- Make the ranch first: it needs at least 30 minutes in the fridge to meld and thicken. It chills while you bake the bacon and boil the eggs, so no extra waiting time is needed.
- Set up a bowl of ice water before boiling the eggs so you can stop the cooking right on time.
- Use eggs that have been in the fridge at least a week; they peel more easily than very fresh ones.
- Slice the avocado last, just before serving, so it stays green.
Make the ranch
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sour cream, buttermilk, lemon juice, grated garlic, chives, parsley, onion powder, salt and pepper until smooth and creamy.
- Taste and add a pinch more salt if needed.
- Cover and refrigerate.
- It needs at least 30 minutes of chilling, which happens while you complete the next steps.

Ready when: Dressing is smooth, pourable but thick enough to coat the back of a spoon
Tip: If it thickens too much after chilling, whisk in 1 tablespoon of buttermilk at a time.
Bake the baconOven 400°F / 205°C
- Arrange an oven rack in the middle and heat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
- Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and lay the bacon slices in a single layer without overlapping.
- Bake 18 to 22 minutes, rotating the pan once halfway, until the bacon is deep golden-brown and mostly crisp.

Ready when: Bacon is deep mahogany at the edges, bubbling has slowed, and the slices feel stiff when lifted with tongs
Tip: Bacon keeps crisping as it cools, so pull it when it is just a shade lighter than you want.
Boil the eggs
- Place the cold eggs in a single layer in a 3-quart saucepan and cover with cold water by 1 inch (2.5 cm).
- Set over high heat and bring to a full rolling boil.
- Immediately turn off the heat, cover with the lid, and let stand for exactly 11 minutes.
- Meanwhile, fill a large bowl with ice and cold water.

Ready when: Water reaches a full rolling boil before the heat is turned off
Tip: Set a timer. Even a few extra minutes gives chalky yolks and a green ring.
Chill and peel eggs
- Use a slotted spoon to move the eggs into the ice bath.
- Let them cool for 10 minutes.
- Tap each egg gently on the counter, roll it to crackle the shell all over, and peel under a thin stream of cool running water, starting at the wide end.

Ready when: Eggs feel cold to the touch and the shell slips off in large pieces
Tip: Peel eggs just before slicing; if you do it ahead, keep them unpeeled in the fridge.
Drain the bacon
- Transfer the bacon with tongs to a paper towel-lined plate and let it cool for 5 minutes.
- Crumble or chop into ½-inch (1.25 cm) pieces.

Ready when: Bacon snaps cleanly when bent
Prep the vegetables
- Halve the cherry tomatoes, slice the cucumber into half-moons and thinly slice the scallions.
- Chop the peeled eggs into ½-inch (1.25 cm) pieces, or quarter them lengthwise if you prefer a rustic look.
- Keep each component in its own pile.

Ready when: Pieces are roughly uniform so each row looks tidy
Tip: Pat the cut tomatoes and cucumber with a paper towel so they do not water down the lettuce.
Cut the avocado
- Just before serving, halve, pit and peel the avocados and cut the flesh into ½-inch (1.25 cm) cubes.
- Toss gently with a pinch of salt if you like.

Ready when: Avocado yields to gentle pressure but holds its cube shape
Tip: Cutting the avocado last keeps it from browning.
Arrange the lettuce
- Check that the ranch has chilled at least 30 minutes.
- Spread the dry torn lettuce over a large platter or divide among 4 wide plates.
- Drizzle with 3 tablespoons (45 ml) of the ranch and toss lightly so the leaves are barely coated.

Ready when: Leaves are lightly glossy, not wet
Tip: Wet lettuce repels dressing and turns the salad watery; dry it thoroughly.
Assemble in rows
- Arrange the eggs, bacon, tomatoes, cucumber, avocado and blue cheese in separate neat rows over the lettuce, and scatter the scallions over the top.
- Serve at once with the remaining ranch in a bowl or drizzled over each serving, about 2 tablespoons (30 ml) per salad.

Ready when: Each topping forms a distinct stripe across the greens
Tip: Serve immediately; once dressed, the lettuce softens within about 15 minutes.
Good to know
Tips
- Start the eggs in cold water, not boiling water, to prevent cracking and rubbery whites.
- Dry the lettuce thoroughly; moisture dilutes the ranch and makes the salad soggy.
- Lightly dressing the lettuce first and passing extra ranch at the table keeps the salad from being heavy.
- Add protein for a bigger meal: 2 cups (about 280 g) of shredded cooked chicken fits well in its own row.
Make ahead
Make the ranch up to 5 days ahead and keep it covered in the fridge. Hard-boil the eggs up to 2 days ahead (peel just before using) and cook the bacon up to 3 days ahead. Wash and dry the lettuce a day ahead and store it in a towel-lined container. Assemble just before serving.
Storage & reheating
Assembled salad does not keep; eat it right away. Store components separately in airtight containers in the fridge: ranch up to 5 days, hard-boiled eggs up to 4 days, cooked bacon up to 4 days, washed lettuce up to 3 days. Re-crisp bacon in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 3 to 4 minutes. Do not freeze the salad, ranch or eggs.
Substitutions
- buttermilk → 1 tablespoon lemon juice or white vinegar stirred into whole milk to make ⅓ cup (80 ml), rested 5 minutes. Gives similar tang though slightly thinner.
- sour cream → plain whole-milk Greek yogurt. Same amount; the ranch will be a little tangier.
- blue cheese → shredded sharp cheddar or crumbled feta. Milder flavor; use the same amount, or omit for a classic ranch-only salad.
- green leaf lettuce → romaine hearts. Crunchier and sturdier; chop into bite-size pieces.
