About Instant Pot

The Instant Pot is an electric pressure cooker. Steam builds inside the sealed pot, which cooks food much faster than usual. It can also sauté, steam, and slow cook, so many meals need just one pot.

You will find soups, rice, beans, shredded chicken, and tender roasts here. Compared to the slow cooker, it is much faster. Compared to the stovetop, it needs less stirring. It takes time to come up to pressure and release it, so plan for that.

Questions folks ask

How much liquid does an Instant Pot need?

Most models need at least a cup of thin liquid. Check your manual.

What is natural release?

You let the pressure drop on its own after cooking. It is gentler on meats and soups.

Why does my Instant Pot say burn?

Food is usually stuck to the bottom or the liquid is too thick. Stir in more liquid and scrape the bottom.

Kitchen tips

  • Always add enough thin liquid so the pot can build pressure.
  • Check that the sealing ring and valve are in place.
  • Use natural release for meats and foamy foods, and quick release for vegetables.
  • Do not fill past the max line.
  • Scrape up browned bits after sautéing to avoid a burn warning.
